Sitting eighth in the Premier League table as the division went into an extended international break, Hull City will have looked back on their opening five games of the season with a great deal of satisfaction. A defeat at Newcastle united last time out may have ended the club’s unbeaten start in the top flight, but even that loss came with further encouragement surrounding the fight in this side, as well as a reaffirmation the tactics and level of play will be enough to survive in the division.
Across the opening five weeks a host of players have played their part in the positive start, with Mo Belloumi’s two goals at Chelsea one standout, while fellow promotion winners like John Egan and Regan Slater have been equally terrific at times.
While manager Sergej Jakirovic has relied heavily on his core of players who won promotion last season, new faces such as goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, centre back Nobel Mendy and midfielder Lucas Gourna-Douath have also been heavily involved.
With that in mind, we asked readers to vote on who they believe the key player has been in City’s impressive start to the season. Five players were selected to choose from with the options being Belloumi, Mendy, Tzolakis, Slater and Egan.
Over 730 votes were cast with a clear winner. Tzolakis received almost half of the votes with 44 percent of the votes cast, with supporters selecting the goalkeeper as their first choice. With only four goals conceded and a string of impressive saves already to his name, the Greek international is looking a terrific signing having been brought in this summer as the new number one.
Belloumi received the second highest vote at 23 percent, with almost a further quarter of supporters clearly believing his goals and work in supporting Oli McBurnie in attack has played the biggest role so far. A new emerging fan favourite is Mendy, who came third with 19 percent, while Egan has 8 percent and Slater just 6 percent.
