A family with a long history of serving Hull’s laundry needs is bringing a new store to North Point Shopping Centre in a “full circle” moment that sees laundry service return to the centre 50 years after the family business first openend. Established in Hull in 2023, Laundry Box builds on a family legacy that dates back to the 1950s.
Director James Crumpton’s father owned the original Civic Launderette when the North Point centre first opened more than 50 years ago. Now, James’ business – Laundry Box Self-Service Launderettes – will open its largest site yet at the centre next month.
North Point now counts more than 60 retailers on its books, both high street names and independent businesses. The centre says it is “delighted” to welcome Laundry Box to the fold. The laundrette has state-of-the-art self-service facilities and laundry services in a modern environment which aims to feel “more like a coffee shop” than a place to do your chores.
The new site features 27kg washing machines for large loads and duvets, and a pet washer and dryer. The new premises will introduce their Smart laundry lockers, which offer professional dry cleaning. Laundry Box says its customers can wash and dry the equivalent of several household loads in under an hour. Its payment system accepts cash, card and mobile payments. And the machines will even send an SMS notification when a customer’s cycle is complete.
James said: “Opening at North Point feels particularly special for us as a proud local family business. There’s a real sense of full circle, given my dad’s history with the Civic Launderette. However, Launderettes have changed enormously since then, and North Point will be our biggest and most advanced Laundry Box yet. We’re committed to creating beautiful, modern launderettes that combine convenience with a space people actually enjoy using. We’re proud to be a Hull business, investing in Hull, and I’m really excited to bring Laundry Box and everything it offers to this part of the city.”
A spokesperson for the centre said: “We’re delighted to welcome Laundry Box to North Point. This addition strengthens our commitment to offering practical, everyday services right in the heart of the community. Open seven days a week, our centre already provides a wide range of food, leisure and essential amenities, and the laundrette will further support our customers’ needs. We look forward to seeing how this new service complements our growing mix of high street retailers and local independent traders.”
Laundry Box will open in North Point on Saturday 3 October, the company’s fifth Laundry Box location across the city.
