The eight-year-old tabby cat’s tail was posted into his owners’ letterbox on Saturday 19 September, five days after he went missing
The body of Max the tabby cat, whose tail was posted through his owners’ letter box after he went missing last week, has been found, his owners have said. Devastated owners Lisa and Louise, who want to only be identified by their first names, were told by a neighbour on Friday that their beloved cat’s remains were in woodland near their home.
Lisa and Louise believe Max’s body was placed in the woods behind Appleton Road and Cropton Road sometime on Friday. The pair said they have searched these woods multiple times over the past two weeks, without finding any trace of Max. The body was discovered by a neighbour who was walking their dog.
Max, who was an eight year old rescue cat, was last seen by Louise and Lisa sitting in their flat’s shared garden on Monday 14 September at about 12pm. When they returned to their home at 4pm, Max had disappeared. Initially, they thought he may have run away and the pair posted appeals on Facebook asking for information about any sightings of Max. They described their cat as “daft as a brush” who loved people, “especially men”.
On Saturday, Lisa made the horrifying discovery. She opened her mailbox slot in the couple’s apartment building to find Max’s severed tail lying inside it. Lisa preserved the tail in a plastic bag while police were called. The tail, which Lisa believes had been pulled off, has now been sent for forensic testing. The couple are due to get married next month and are now questioning whether their wedding should go ahead. They say they are living in fear in their home and have barricaded their bedroom door closed at night. They have since sent their other cat away to live with friends.
Lisa thanked the public for the amount of “love and support” the couple has been given and asked local residents to check CCTV because she believes “he has only just been put there”. The couple plan to host a vigil on Sunday evening at 7pm at the gardens outside their home where Max was last seen. A Just Giving page was set up by a friend of the owners to raise money to be given as a reward for any information that may lead to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Max’s death. The page has raised £1,300 since it was set up on Tuesday.
On Monday, Humberside Police issued a statement which said that anyone with information that may insist with the investigation is asked to call the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 26*132718.
