Herrington is expected to replace Nobel Mendy in the Hull City backline this week

Lucas Herrington looks set to claim his first Premier League start this weekend and Sergej Jakirovic expects him to take it all in his stride.

The Australian is the most likely candidate to start in Hull City’s defensive line instead of Nobel Mendy, who will miss the trip to Newcastle United through concussion.

Herrington is no stranger to the Premier League, of course, having stepped off the bench to replace Mendy in each of the last four league games and the Australian has looked more than comfortable in all of those outings, despite his only previous club experience coming in the A-League and the MLS.

It’s no surprise then that Jakirovic believes the 19-year-old is more than ready to take on the Magpies and he’ll get that opportunity on Saturday.

“When I spoke for the first time with him I saw immediately how mature he is,” Jakirovic said. “He is 2007, it’s unbelievable.

“You see also he has this leadership inside. He is speaking all the time on the pitch, no matter who is in front of him, Crooks, Slater, John Egan, he tries to lead them.

“It’s perfect. I don’t have any doubts or fears when he is playing there. I’m very happy, very comfortable.

“We also have Paddy McNair there, he is also now healthy. He had some problems with his feet but now everything is good.

“Of course, Mendy is a first XI player, he is a very, very important member of the squad but we have players and this is a great chance for him. He already show he can compete at this level and this is enough for me.”
