KR cruised to a comfortable win over Huddersfield

Hull KR secured their spot in the Super League play-offs as they beat Huddersfield Giants 36-6 on what was Willie Peters’ last night at Craven Park.

It was always going to be an emotional night in east Hull but KR put in a strong showing to mark the occasion and keep their hopes of reaching the Grand Final alive.

Arthur Mourgue scored two on the night for the Robins, with Elliot Minchella, Jack Broadbent, Jez Litten and Tom Davies also touching down against the Giants, who struggled for discipline throughout the evening.

Ultimately, then, KR go to St Helens on the final night of the regular season knowing their spot in the top six is secured, but whether they finish fifth or sixth is yet to be decided.

After three successive losses, KR needed a response and with their big hitters rested and fresh, they went about racking up points early.

KR were on top from the start with sloppy discipline from the visitors giving Rovers field position and an opportunity to build early pressure.

The Robins were banging hard on Huddersfield’s door with chances for Dean Hadley and Mourgue before Minchella hammered his way through, spinning out of the challenge to power over and touch down under the sticks.

Mourgue was asking all sorts of questions and it was the Frenchman who scored the second of the game, stepping back against the grain with a neat step to break through the tackle and touch down with ease.

When it’s going for you, it’s going for you, and Rovers certainly found that out in the build-up to their third try when Tyrone May’s kick fortuitously bounced off a Giants leg and into the arms of Broadbent, who powered through a gap.

The full-back was then extremely lucky not to have his forward pass to Minchella spotted by Marcus Griffiths, before receiving the ball back and touching down.

Huddersfield rallied at the end of the first half and got themselves over just before the break as Tanguy Zenon touched down.

Rovers had a couple of early chances in the second half for Peta Hiku but couldn’t execute with Huddersfield managing to keep themselves in the game, just.

However, KR cut loose as the second half wore on with Litten getting the scoreboard moving once more, burrowing his way through the line from dummy half.

Mourgue got Rovers’ fifth, finishing a fine move started by Minchella. The skipper broke through a gap and put Amone away before following up, getting it back and putting Mourgue in under the sticks.

Davies strolled home in the corner for their sixth and that wrapped things up on KR’s last home game of the season.
