The left-back would almost certainly have been left out of Sergej Jakirovic’s squad
Homegrown full-back Matty Jacob has left Hull City to join League Two Newport County on a deal until January.
As the fourth choice left-back at the MKM Stadium, Jacob was unlikely to be named in Sergej Jakirovic’s 25-man Premier League squad this week and he was one of the players the club were keen to find a move for as the deadline day approached.
Well, it wasn’t announced on deadline day, but Jacob has found himself the move he wanted, with the 25-year-old making the switch to South Wales.
The move represents a fourth loan switch for him, having had spells with Pickering Town, Gateshead and most recently Reading last season. He made 16 appearances for the Royals in League One after joining the club last summer but ultimately his loan lasted until January when he returned to the MKM Stadium.
He’s made 29 appearances for City since making his breakthrough for the club during the 2023-24 season. Five of those outings came last year after returning from Reading with his most recent appearance coming against Bristol City in February.
He’ll join up with Hayden Mullins’ side with a determination to prove a point then as the Welsh side bid to kick on after finishing 20th in the fourth tier last time around. As it stands they sit 14th in League Two after picking up four points in their opening four games.
Jacob can be expected to make his debut for the club at Northampton Town on Saturday.
The Tigers are still pushing to offload more players and with transfer windows remaining open across Europe, that remains a possibility. Abdus Omur and David Akintola have interest from Türkiye, while the club are also looking for loans for Oscar Zambrano and Kieran Dowell.
