Yorkshire Water has issued a reminder to customers to use water wisely ahead of the UK’s fifth heatwave of the year. With temperatures in the region set to soar above 30C on Thursday, August 13, the utility giant – which serves more than five million customers – is gearing up for increased demand on its services.
During the previous heatwaves, water usage topped 1.55bn litres per day, an increase of more than 220 million litres on average demand. That increase is the equivalent to Leeds, Harrogate and Halifax’s combined daily supply.
Yorkshire Water said that, so far this summer, there have been 39 days where usage has exceeded 1.4bn litres per day, which is the highest number of days above 1.4bn on record. Demand this week is expected to jump above 1.4bn every day due to the high temperatures.
While Yorkshire is not currently in drought, the region has moved into prolonged dry weather status, the stage before drought following a sustained period of low rainfall and higher temperatures. Yorkshire Water’s reservoir stocks are currently at 58%, above the 42.1% they were at this stage in 2025, but well below the 73.9% average for this time of year.
Debbie Feldhaus, head of strategic water resources and regional planning, said: “This is the fifth heatwave of the summer, and we know that when temperatures rise, so does demand for water. With temperatures set to rise above 30 degrees in the region, we’re preparing for a significant increase in water usage, which will put pressure on our network.

“Our teams are working hard to manage supplies and ensure we can continue providing a reliable supply to our customers. But we are also asking everyone to play their part, use water wisely, and save it where possible.
“Small changes can make a big difference. Whether it’s using a watering can instead of a hosepipe, taking shorter showers or only putting the washing machine and dishwasher on when they’re full, every drop saved helps us protect our water resources now and for the future.
“Our region is now in prolonged dry weather status, reflecting the hot, dry spring and summer we’ve had in the region. Our reservoir stocks are higher than they were at this time last year, but with water demand at all time highs and no sign of significant rain in the forecast, it is important we all try to make small changes to our water use habits.”

How to help conserve water in a heatwave
- Use a watering can rather than a hosepipe when watering plants.
- Only run washing machines and dishwashers when loads are full.
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
- Keep a jug of water in the fridge rather than running the tap until it is cold
- Reuse water from paddling pools or washing up to water plants
- Take shorter showers where possible
