Presenter’s visit to Hemswell Cliff car boot sale is a hit with fans
Peter Levy has shared the news that his second collection of mugs, sent in to the BBC Look North studio, has helped to raise more than £1,100 for the Children In Need (CIN) appeal. The news anchor had previously invited fans to come along and meet him at Hemswell Cliff market and car boot sale, pick up a mug and pop a donation into the CIN bucket if they wished.
After unloading dozens of branded mugs at the car boot, just off the A15 in Lincolnshire, Peter had a steady queue of “buyers”. He posted on X after Sunday’s event: “Thank you to everyone who came along. An amazing £1,193. 63p raised for Children In Need. Thank you so much. Peter x”
Last December, Peter was a hit visitor to the Walton Street market and car boot in Hull with boxes of mugs that he “traded” for donations for Children In Need, raising more than £500. The popular broadcaster has continued to invite mugs into his studio, donated by clubs, societies and charities, with the chance of them getting a mention and a guest appearance during his evening bulletin; Peter then adds them to his collection.
The “Mug of the Day” segment began last year when Peter, asked to feature a Hull City mug on the programme, came up with the idea of giving community groups, charities and sports clubs a moment in the spotlight on the regional news show. The presenter said the generosity of people offering donations in return for mugs on his stall had been “overwhelming”.
Peter has described Mug of the Day as a “win, win”, because the various groups get their moment of fame on the TV and the mugs help to fundraise through the giveaways. In a BBC report of Sunday’s (August 9) event, one person had an eye on a particular mug.
Yvonne Fletcher, was buying her own mug back – she sent it in to Peter earlier this year. “I sent it in at the beginning of April advertising a dog show for the end of the month in Tetney, in aid of St John’s Methodist Chapel,” said Yvonne. “We raised £2,500.”
Having had the mug featured had brought attention to their event, she said. Peter said: “If that isn’t showing how it works, that’s unbelievable.”
