Andy Last confirmed no injuries have arisen from Hull FC’s derby defeat to Hull KR on Thursday night, with the decision not to put Hugo Salabio back on a coaching call that the interim boss admits he got wrong.
Salabio started the 252nd derby alongside Harvie Hill and played with plenty of aggression and intent. He nailed Tyrone May in the game’s first play with a big tackle and carried the ball strong in his time on the field.
Speaking post-match, Last told Hull Live the call is one he ‘will wear’ but nonetheless praised Salabio, who is still out of contract at the end of the year and continues to do his stock no harm.
“The reason not to put Hugo back on is one that I will wear,” Last said. “I got that one wrong. The way that he started the game was outstanding. He had some intent and he carried the ball strong. He really set the tone for us.
“Just looking at the bench, I just wanted to get Herman (Ese’ese) back out there, hoping that Herman could come up with a big play for us. Obviously, he’s a high-profile marquee player for us, but I probably got that one wrong.
“He’s had a good spell for us, Hugo. He’s carrying the ball well. He’s doing everything he can to put himself in the shop window for us or someone else.
“He’s stuck to his task and he’s worked hard. He’s carrying the ball strong and hitting some holes, which is what you want from a front rower. I’m pleased for Hugo.”
Turning 26 years old this coming Monday, Salabio has now played eight games for Hull this year, adding to the six he got in his debut season last term. Hull Live understands he has had interest from at least one other Super League club, with his future still to be resolved.
