Andy Last may have been ‘disgusted and disappointed’ with Hull FC’s performance at York Knights on Thursday night but there’s no time to dwell on it, with the interim coach insisting his side will continue to battle on with one third of the season still to go.
The Black and Whites hit a new low in North Yorkshire, with the Knights completing a Super League double over Hull, and now have seven days before they return to action, taking on Leigh Leopards at the MKM Stadium on Saturday evening.
Dusting themselves down, Hull, with nine games of the season remaining, will look to respond against the Leythers on home turf, and regardless of how hopeless things seem right now, Last has laid out the importance to keep going and finish the season as strong as they possibly can.
“We want to try and finish the season as strong as possible,” Last said. “What we don’t want to do is finish the season in a bit of a slump. We want to finish the season in a positive manner and then that allows the off-season to be positive and then you can attack the start of the following year with some positivity.
“We’re striving to be at our best every week and get as many wins as we possibly can. It’s about consistency in performance, but it’s not easy to sort out.
“The messaging for the York game was right. We spoke about attitude. We spoke about being better than we was against Hull KR in order to get the win against York. And the lads have failed to deliver on what we said we was going to do. We’ve just got to keep working hard and we’ve got to try to keep the group together.”
Expanding on the consistency point, Last, whose side were had their moments against Wigan and Hull KR before an abject showing against York, added: “That’s the challenge, but a good player is a consistent player and that’s a challenge for us as a group.
“It’s no good doing it for a couple of weeks and having a couple of weeks off because that for me is not a good player, a good player turns up and is eight out of 10 every week and we need more of our players to be striving for that level of consistency.
“And if we do that, and add a little bit more quality to our team, we’re going to win more games. It’s a key message and it’s one that was stressed. The players are fully aware of it.”
