‘We want the whole night to feel like an occasion’

One of Hull’s newest bars has turned its upstairs venue in into a Guinness Fan Zone for the World Cup. Football fans have already enjoyed England’s exciting defeat of Croatia in the newly transformed space which will show every England and Scotland World Cup fixture, as well as the biggest knockout fixtures as the tournament reaches its later stages.
With several giant 100-inch TVs the space is also equipped with bench tables ideal for groups. Guinness, DJs, entertainment and food are also on offer on matchdays when venue bosses hope to recreate the atmosphere of major fan parks, inside the Newland Avenue Irish bar.
The menu on offer includes Irish spice bags, burgers and buns, with the kitchen open until 10pm for England’s next game against Ghana, next Tuesday.
Jack Mangan, co-owner of Molly Mangan’s, said: “The atmosphere for England v Croatia was unbelievable. We opened Molly Mangan’s to create a proper Irish bar for Hull, with Guinness, live music, sport and big nights out, and the Guinness Fan Zone takes that to another level. We wanted to give people in HU5 the kind of fan zone experience you usually associate with city centres or the big screenings you see on TV. Upstairs has been completely opened up into a proper World Cup space, with massive screens, big tables and a real party atmosphere.”
Danilo Swires, entertainment manager at Molly Mangan’s, said: “It’s not just about putting the match on. We want the whole night to feel like an occasion, with music, entertainment and the crowd really involved from before kick-off to after the final whistle. Molly’s is already known for live music, but the fan zone gives us a new way to bring people together for the biggest games of the summer.”
Lauren Hull, general manager at Molly Mangan’s, said fans should arrive early for upcoming World Cup fixtures, with the Guinness Fan Zone expected to be busy again after England’s opening win.
She said: “The response to the first England game was amazing and we’re already getting lots of interest for the next fixtures. The big bench tables are ideal for groups, so we’d encourage people to get down early, get settled in, grab some food and make a proper night of it.”
England face Ghana on Tuesday, June 23, with kick-off at 9pm, before taking on Panama on Saturday, June 27. Molly Mangan’s will also show Scotland’s remaining games and selected major knockout fixtures throughout the tournament.
