The community initiative will see people building towards 100 squats a day
A community fitness initiative is bringing people together this June with a shared goal of being able to complete 100 squats a day by the end of the month. The inspiring challenge is the idea of Katie Fountain, of Gymophobics, in Hessle.
More than 60 members and supporters have already signed up to take part in the “Squat Challenge,” demonstrating fantastic community spirit and commitment to improving their health and wellbeing, while also raising vital funds for Sight Support Hull & East Yorkshire (SSHEY). Participants will gradually increase their daily squat count throughout June, developing strength, stamina, and confidence along the way.
As well as boosting overall fitness, the challenge highlights the importance of lower body strength in maintaining independence and preventing falls, an especially important factor as people age. Strong legs and improved balance can significantly reduce the risk of falls, helping individuals stay active and safe for longer.
Katie said she was inspired to support SSHEY after learning about the charity’s work through a friend. She wanted to create something inclusive, accessible, and motivating for the members.
Katie said: “The gym ladies have really got behind it, and I’m absolutely delighted with the uptake. It’s been brilliant to see everyone getting involved in something that not only supports their own health but also raises funds for such an important local cause.”
Katie is going even further in her fundraising efforts, taking on additional personal challenges this year, including Total Warrior in June and the Great North Run in September, all in support of SSHEY.
Alison Stannard, CEO of SSHEY, praised the initiative and the community behind it. She said: “We are incredibly grateful to Katie and everyone at Gymophobics Hessle for their enthusiasm and support.
“Initiatives like this make a real difference, helping us continue our work supporting people with sight loss across our region. I’ve been so inspired by the commitment shown that I’ve decided to take part myself!”
Funds raised will go towards providing vital services for people living with sight loss, helping them maintain independence, confidence, and connection within their communities.
Anyone wishing to support the challenge can do so via the JustGiving page set up for it. Those interested in joining the challenge are encouraged to contact Katie directly at Gymophobics Hessle by calling 01482 641001 .
The JustGiving appeal page said: “Throughout June, Gymophobics Hessle members, along with friends, family and other supporters, will be taking part in our June Squat Challenge to raise money for Sight Support Hull & East Yorkshire. Every day during June, we’ll be completing squats and gradually building them up throughout the month.
“The challenge is designed so everybody can take part, whatever their fitness level — including chair squats and sit-to-stands. By the end of the month, we’ll have improved our strength, mobility and confidence while raising money for an amazing local charity supporting people living with sight loss.”
