Hull City have booked their place back in the Premier League, and they did it in the best way possible – with a play-off final win.

The City overtook Wembley for the day as they hoped to overcome Middlesbrough in the final. Just days earlier, the team thought that they would be playing Southampton.

But the Spygate saga happened, resulting in the Saints being expelled from the competition. Hull believed that they should have been promoted automatically, but instead they had to overcome Middlesbrough, who lost to Southampton in the semi-final.

After the off-the-pitch drama of the last few days, it was back to matters on the pitch for both teams, despite the disrupted build-up.

The game looked to be heading for extra time when up stepped Oli McBurnie to take advantage of a goalkeeping error and put the ball into the back of the net. Cue delirium from the Dean Windass end of Wembley Stadium.

There was an agonising wait for the full-time whistle, which signalled Hull‘s return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.
