The terrified mum curled up in a ball to protect herself as her daughter violently ‘lashed out’

An aggressive young woman “lost it” and pulled her terrified mother to the floor before strangling her after a heated confrontation turned violent. Kadie Johnson “lashed out” after losing her temper and the mother curled up in a ball on the floor before later locking herself in a bathroom.

The mother managed to contact the police and an eight-minute telephone call that she made during the attack was “harrowing” to hear, Hull Crown Court heard. Johnson, 19, of Walliker Street, off Anlaby Road, west Hull, admitted intentional strangulation, assault and causing criminal damage on September 26.

Bede Porter, prosecuting, said that Johnson was awoken by the sound of her mother getting ready to go out of the house in Hull where they lived at the time. Johnson shouted from her room: “Do you mind keeping the f***ing noise down?”

Her mother replied: “It was all right for you to be banging around at 20 past 12 this morning.” Johnson came downstairs and told her: “You’re not going anywhere.”

She blocked her mother’s way and continued shouting and swearing in her mother’s face. The mother, 41 at the time, told Johnson to move out of the way or she would call the police.

“She did call the police,” said Mr Porter. The eight-minute telephone call was played to the court.

The mother could be heard saying that Johnson was throwing glass, candles and ornaments. Johnson repeatedly grabbed her mother by her hair and pulled her backwards and forwards by her hair.

The mother fled upstairs at one point and went into a bedroom, where she curled up into a ball. “The defendant grabbed her by her head again and pulled her on the floor,” said Mr Porter.

While she was on the floor, Johnson grabbed her by her neck, put her hand around the back of her head and squeezed, restricting her mother’s ability to breathe.

“She didn’t at any point lose consciousness,” said Mr Porter. “She was able to get herself into the bathroom, where she was able to lock the door.

“That’s where she was when the police arrived. She was able to leave the bathroom.” Johnson continued damaging items belonging to her mother, including a TV and a mobile phone.

Johnson was arrested and taken to the police station. She denied strangling her mother but accepted that she tried to stop her leaving. She had no previous convictions.

Hannah Turner, mitigating, said that the recording of the 999 call was “harrowing” to hear and the mother was clearly distraught at the time that Johnson “lashed out” at her. “There is perhaps little that can be said in terms of the offence itself,” said Miss Turner.

Johnson told the court: “It was a blur that day. I do feel bad for what I did to her.” She agreed that she “lost it”.
