Year-long initiative will see students develop skills across departments at the online retailer’s Melton fulfilment centre
A new supported internship programme helping young people of East Yorkshire into roles such as warehousing and logistics has been announced. Amazon and charity DFN Project SEARCH are partnering in the initiative.
The programme is for young people aged 18 to 24 who have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and are working towards paid employment. The supported internship will help young people make a successful transition from education into employment, through structured workplace learning and tailored support.
Amazon’s supported internship will offer places to young people interested in areas such as warehousing and logistics at its fulfilment centre in Melton. The year-long programme will begin in September, and students will take part in a series of rotations across different departments, supported by a job coach and workplace mentor.
There will also be classroom-based learning delivered by Humber Learning Consortium to develop key employability skills. The programme adds to the local supported internship network and increases the choice of internships available to young people in the East Riding.
Humberside Police, City Health Care Partnership, Siemens Mobility and Asda all run programmes supporting students. Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education at East Riding Council, said: “I am delighted that Amazon is now offering supported internships.

“It’s a great opportunity for young people with an EHCP to gain experience of working, develop workplace skills, while also receiving support.” Young people and their families are invited to find out more via an online event taking place today (Wednesday, May 20) from 1pm to 2pm or from 6pm to 7pm.
The sessions will provide young people, parents/carers and professionals with an overview of the programme, what to expect from a supported internship and how to apply. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
For more information, to book onto an event or to express an interest in applying, please contact Humber Learning Consortium on email at office@hlc-vol.org, by calling 01482 327438 or by visiting https://tinyurl.com/amazondfn
