He’s played a pivotal role this season so far for the Robins
Willie Peters has taken the opportunity to emphasise the importance of Tyrone May to Hull KR’s game plan and structure.
The half-back has started the Super League season tremendously well and as KR build towards producing their best form, May is arguably turning in some of the best performances of his time in east Hull so far.
The one-time Samoa international has racked up 13 try assists in nine Super League games so far and he has five tries to his name in all competitions, including a hat-trick against York Knights in the Challenge Cup.
May has been just as busy defensively too, making 215 tackles this year so far, which is a figure expected of some hookers, not a string-pulling scrum-half.
It’s that type of form that has seen him named as one of the five early candidates in the frame for the Man of Steel award this week, with a third of the season gone. And, although he couldn’t record a try or an assist last week in the one-sided win over Castleford Tigers, May still picked up Sky Sports’ Man of the Match award, with the broadcasters recognising the input he had in sealing the 50-6 win.
Peters admits May’s contribution has often gone under the radar but he’s always played such a key role for the Robins.
“He’s a massive part of what we do, Tyrone, really important piece to our attack and how our team functions,” Peters said when asked about May’s form.
“He goes unnoticed sometimes and when I say unnoticed, I mean he’s not usually the one throwing the last pass but he’s orchestrating a lot of it.
“Mikey is asking a lot of questions with his running game so when our spine is running we’re a dangerous team.”
