East Riding College student is lapping up her latest success
A talented East Riding College student has claimed first place in a prestigious international culinary competition held in Venice. Ruby Goodens, a Level 2 Hospitality student based at the college’s Bridlington campus, was crowned winner of the Combi Guru Challenge, a world-renowned competition hosted by Unox.
Representing East Riding College – part of the TEC Partnership – on the international stage for the second consecutive year, Ruby competed against top culinary students from across the globe. Having secured second place in last year’s challenge, she returned with determination and elevated her performance, impressing judges with her exceptional skill, creativity and professionalism.
Her beautifully executed dishes stood out among a highly competitive field, earning her the top honour and recognition as the overall winner of the challenge. Anthony Gascoigne, hospitality and catering course team leader at East Riding College, said: “Ruby is a well deserving winner of Combi Guru Challenge.
“The win is testament to her commitment and enthusiasm to developing her skills. She has demonstrated real resilience in competing at such a high level.
“The hospitality team here at Bridlington could not be prouder of her achievement.” Ruby is currently still in Venice, enjoying her all-expenses-paid trip and experiencing Italian cuisine following her success.

The promising young chef, from Brough, was out to prove she is the cream of the crop last autumn, when she also scooped third place in Le Cordon Bleu London’s prestigious 2025 Scholarship Competition. It earned her a place on Le Cordon Bleu’s Summer Essentials Course, plus a two-week internship at CORD and special prizes from The Savoy and Phaidon.
This latest accomplishment for Ruby, who works in the kitchens of Cave Castle Hotel, South Cave, highlights the strength of the college’s hospitality and catering provision and reinforces its reputation for nurturing talented students capable of excelling on an international stage.
CombiGuru Challenge is the competition between catering colleges conceived and promoted by Unox, a leading company in the production and sale of commercial ovens and innovative solutions for the food service industry.
