Musician Robin Nolan’s show promises ‘magic for all Beatles and gypsy jazz fans’
One of the world’s most celebrated gypsy jazz guitarists is heading for Hull, ready to perform a show that has deep connections to the late Beatle George Harrison running through it.
Following the release of his acclaimed album, For The Love of George, on Dark Horse Records, guitarist Robin Nolan is bringing a new live show to the city that celebrates the music of Harrison and The Beatles.
The album was recorded at Harrison’s home, Friar Park, and created with the support of the Harrison family. Featuring performances on George Harrison’s own guitars – the first time they had recorded music since the 1970s – the project offers a rare and deeply personal connection to the late Beatle’s musical world.
“This isn’t a tribute show – it’s a continuation of a musical connection that began with George himself,” says Nolan who now brings that project to the stage in a dynamic live setting.
Blending Harrison’s iconic songs with his signature gypsy jazz style, alongside select original compositions and Django Reinhardt-inspired material, Nolan is recognised as one of the leading figures in modern gypsy jazz. He has performed at major venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Montreux Jazz Festival, and was personally invited by Harrison to play at Friar Park.
With internationally acclaimed musicians Chris Quinn and Tom Moore, Nolan will be delivering a fresh, melodic and highly accessible take on Harrison’s catalogue, from well-loved Beatles songs to deeper cuts. It has been described by promoters as “magic for all Beatles and gypsy jazz fans”.
You can catch the trio at the Albemarle Music Centre, Ferensway, on Saturday, May 9, at 7.30pm. Support will be provided by Hull-based musicians Lewis Kilvington, Rob Burgess and David Tomlinson, who make up Hot Club De Hull.
