An independent village pub beloved for its beautiful south-facing beer garden is proving to be a success story amid the economic doom and gloom. Despite an ongoing national trend for bar closures, The Pub at Etton is approaching its one-year anniversary with optimism.
Located about four miles northwest of Beverley, the village pub, previously known as The Light Dragoon, is small enough that it can keep costs down and does not have to pay higher business rates, said director Geneva Low. The pub will officially celebrate its first anniversary on April 24.
Geneva, 27, told Hull Live: “We have just kept it really simple, as simple as you can really. We’ve been really busy, if anything we are getting busier, so for us the pub trade is not dying like everyone says it is.
“In the winter-time, we’ve got a beautiful log burner and it is cosy in there. But summer, I’d say we’ve got one of the best south-facing beer terraces in Yorkshire. It’s just beautiful: hidden from the wind, all-day sun.
“We have good food vans on most weekends, Fridays and Saturdays if we can, and it just brings everybody in. Not just from Etton, but from everywhere because it is on a massive cycling route and walking route.”
Geneva said the drinks are kept simple as well: two hand-pulls, two lagers, one cider, and Guinness. There is also a small but well thought-out selection of red, white and rosé wines.
