City face the biggest week of their season so far in their quest to secure a play-off place

Former Sunderland ace Kevin Phillips admits he understands the anxiety surrounding Hull City as the season nears a thrilling climax with the Tigers firmly in the promotion race.

Saturday’s controversial 2-1 defeat at rivals Sheffield United was their second in five games, with their only victory in that period coming against bottom side Sheffield Wednesday, along with Easter weekend draws with Oxford United and leaders Coventry City.

Despite their sticky run in recent weeks, City remain in an enviable position with a four-point cushion to the chasing pack, and just four games left.

The first of those four comes against Phillips’ old club, Birmingham City, at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, before trips to Leicester City and Charlton Athletic in the days following the visit of the mid-table Blues and then a final-day showdown with resurgent Norwich City to round off the regular campaign.

Phillips says there’s no reason for panic amongst supporters at this stage, with their fate firmly within their grasp, but admits a result this weekend would just make everybody feel a little easier about things going into the final three.

“Naturally, the fans will be worried,” Phillips told BestBettingSites. “I’ve spoken about them many times this season. They’ve had a fantastic season to be where they are after the conditions and the restraints they’ve been working under. I would be slightly concerned, but they’re still in the play-off position after a bad run.

“If they could get a result this weekend against Birmingham, obviously, they’re coming off the back of a great result, then that sets them up really nicely for the last three games. And they’ve got every opportunity to get to the play-offs. So it’s not panic time, but they need a result this weekend, that’s for sure.”
