
Police have issued a statement after bystanders said a ‘hero’ jumped in to save the young child
A little boy who was rescued from Pearson Park pond on Wednesday afternoon. The youngster was “conscious and breathing” when emergency services arrived on the scene, Humberside Police said today.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service alerted the police to the incident at around 3.20pm. A member of the public had seen the boy and jumped into the water to save him.
The three-year-old was taken to hospital “as a precautionary measure”, police said. Witnesses who posted about the incident on social media described how they had not realised a child was in the pond.
They recalled seeing what looked like a “ball” and a “bin bag” in the water, which turned out to be the boy’s head and coat. Then a man noticed the boy and jumped in to save him, before leaving the scene.
His identity is not known, but he was hailed a “hero” by witnesses. Other members of the public were said to have assisted in warming the boy up with towels once he was back on dry land.
A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “Officers were alerted by the ambulance service at 3.20pm on Wednesday 8 April, who had been called to Pearson Park, Hull where it was reported a child had been rescued from a pond by a member of the public.
“Officers were immediately deployed by which time the three-year old child was conscious and breathing, they were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.”
