‘Sharing these treats with the local community helps bring smiles to children and reminds families we’re here to support them’
Hull-based charity Doreen’s has once again spread happiness across the local community with its annual Easter campaign, delivering 2,900 Easter eggs to schools throughout the city. Mother-daughter co-founders Sue and Ashleigh have built the initiative into a much-loved tradition over the past six years, with the aim of ensuring every child in the area enjoys the simple pleasure of an Easter treat.
This year’s total represents a near 20 per cent rise on last year’s figure of 2,420 eggs distributed. It has been made possible thanks to backing from Hull City Council, West Carr councillors, retail giant B&M, and fellow local charity the Society of M.I.C.E.
Staff at the charity say the surge in donations is a testament to the community’s spirit of generosity, particularly at a time when many families continue to feel the squeeze of the cost-of-living crisis. Teachers and school staff have warmly welcomed the campaign, highlighting the meaningful difference it makes to pupils’ wellbeing and sense of belonging.
With momentum growing year on year, the charity has set its sights on reaching even more schools and families in the future. Ashleigh said: “The rising cost of living has made it difficult for some families to enjoy the simple pleasures. We’re proud to be able to provide a small moment of joy for children who might otherwise miss out.

Operating under the ethos of ‘Delivering our Range of Everyday Essential Needs’, Doreen’s offers vital assistance to hard-pressed families across the area, along with vulnerable groups including victims of domestic violence. The charity officially opened its new Hub at Bransholme’s North Point Shopping Centre in January.
The Hub serves as a welcoming, inclusive space where the community and local groups can enjoy a coffee and a catch-up, while also housing a charity shop to raise much-needed funds and providing a base for the charity to assemble care packages and stock their food bank.
A spokesperson from North Point Shopping Centre added: “We are incredibly proud to have Doreen’s as part of our centre’s community. The dedication and care that goes into the Easter egg campaign each year is truly inspiring, and it’s wonderful to see how these efforts bring a bit of joy and support to families in our local area who need it most.”
