The climax of the Championship season looks like being a thrilling affair
The majority of Hull City’s players are enjoying a well-earned rest after a busy Championship schedule, as the quest for World Cup qualification takes centre stage across Europe.
When Sergej Jakirovic’s men return to training on Monday, they’ll know there’s only seven games left for them to secure a play-off place, or even go one better and clinch automatic promotion.
City‘s impressive campaign to date has caught many by surprise, having been backed to struggle against the drop before a ball was kicked back in August.
After 39 games, City sit fifth in the table, five points off second and three clear of the chasing pack below the play-off, and according to stats experts Opta, Jakirovic’s charges will remain there.

Opta say the top 10 will remain largely the same as it is now, with Coventry City and Middlesbrough going up as champions and runners-up respectively. The play-offs will see Ipswich Town, Millwall, City and Southampton occupy the four places, with Wrexham missing out.
City are backed to finish on 75 points, seven behind second-placed Boro and three clear of Phil Parkinson’s Red Dragons, while their chances of promotion through the play-offs are given a 73 per cent chance. Alex Neil’s are favourites for promotion from the final with an 84 per cent chance. Ipswich are 60 per cent and Southampton is 69 per cent respectively.
In reality, predicted tables mean little at any stage of the season, but what it does show is that City remain in a commanding position, and based on their performances in the opening 39 games, they remain on course to achieve something special.
