Clifton Primary School on Burslem Street is part of Humber Education Trust

Teachers at a Sculcoates primary school have described their delight after Ofsted inspectors said it is of “strong standard”. Clifton Primary School on Burslem Street was inspected under the education watchdog’s new framework with praise for the “ambitious, creative and detailed” curriculum.

They said “pupils thrive at this highly inclusive school” where parents feel that “children are at the heart of everything” that is done there. In the report, inspectors said: “Pupils come here from all walks of life, and many speak English as an additional language. Everyone does well. All pupils are welcome here, no matter what their background or what barriers they may face.”

They added: “Relationships are warm and respectful; older pupils look after younger ones. Leadership opportunities are plentiful and include roles such as safeguarding ambassadors and assembly technicians. The curriculum is enriched by clubs such as board games and football.”

Clifton Primary caters for about 372 pupils and is part of the multi academy trust Humber Education Trust which runs a number of other schools in the region. Inspectors noted the majority of children at the school speak English as a second language but make rapid progress.

Teachers and leaders were noted for their efforts to support pupils. The report said: “They have high expectations for all pupils. They make sure that vulnerable pupils are well supported. Leaders and staff remove any barriers to learning and work with other professionals to help pupils. Pupils achieve very well here.”

Headteacher Terri Hadfield said: “At Clifton Primary School our vision is to give children the knowledge, skills and voice to develop their character so that they are able to flourish. I was delighted to hear that the inspectors recognised this, including that pupils are happy and feel safe, thriving both socially and academically.

It is a highly inclusive school where everyone is welcomed and valued as part of a ‘school community’. I am delighted that the report reflects the care and commitment of its leadership, staff, students and wider school community.”
