The council says it will ‘always take action where we can against anyone fly-tipping rubbish’

A Hull businessman who said he had given rubbish to someone else to get rid of that was found dumped in the East Yorkshire countryside has been ordered to pay almost £1,000 by a court. Bin bags and cardboard boxes were found on grass in New Ellerby in the autumn of 2023.

Investigations by East Riding Of Yorkshire Council found the business waste belonged to Olijan Haxhia. He later admitted failing in his duty of care to ensure his business waste was disposed of correctly when he appeared at Beverley Magistrates’ Court earlier this month.

Haxhia, 32, of Ferensway, Hull, was fined £120 and ordered to pay costs of £811.70 and a £48 victim surcharge.

The court heard streetscene enforcement officers found the waste on a grass verge in Lambwath Lane, New Ellerby, on October 11, 2023. Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “People should never dump waste, whether if it’s from a household or a business, there are proper and legal ways of disposing of it.

“We will always take action where we can against anyone fly-tipping rubbish.”

Anyone caught fly-tipping could be ordered to pay a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 or the case could be taken to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment. In addition, any vehicles used in connection with the fly-tipping of waste can be seized and destroyed.

Residents can report any fly-tipping or suspicious activity to the council on 01482 393939, or online at www.eastriding.gov.uk/fly-tipping
