The weather could cause ‘some transport disruption’, the Met Office has said

A weather warning is currently in place across the majority of East Yorkshire with strong winds and heavy rain potentially causing “some transport disruption”. The Met Office yellow-level alert for wind came into effect at 5am and will be in force until 8pm today.

The forecaster says delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are possible with gusts of more than 50mph expected quite widely. In its warning, the Met Office says: “Strong winds are expected during Thursday associated with an active weather front moving southeastwards across the UK.

“Gusts of 50-55 mph are expected widely, with some coastal locations and areas downwind of high ground seeing gusts of 60 mph or even 70 mph in a few places. Winds will ease from the north through the day.”

The warning area covers almost all of East Yorkshire except for parts of Holderness close to the south-east coast just north of Spurn.

Exposed routes in our area may be affected by the strong gusts. As of 8am on the Humber Bridge, there is a speed restriction of 30mph but, on social media, a spokesperson for the crossing said they will “take the appropriate action if we feel there is a risk”. This could include closing the footpaths as well as closing the bridge to high-sided and wind vulnerable vehicles.

Though the morning will be mostly dry with some bright spells, rain will move in from the west during the afternoon and into the evening, some of which could be heavy. It should clear in the early hours of Friday.

While temperatures will peak at around 14C, it will feel much cooler in the wind. It is expected to turn colder overnight with lows of around 3 or 4C by Friday morning.
