Courts for the popular sport have been popping up across the region in the past year

Plans for the construction of two padel courts near Driffield have been approved by East Riding Council. The courts are to be established at Driffield Rugby Union Football Club on Driffield Road, Kelleythorpe.
The application, which was launched by Yorkshire Padel Clubs Ltd, was approved by East Riding Council on March 4. The courts are to be placed on a part of the rugby club’s ground that is currently used for general storage.
Plans state: “The site is highly accessible to Driffield and is therefore a perfect location for the application proposals. The rugby club is already linked to the town via suitable paths and is within walking distance to Driffield.”
In addition to the padel courts, the approved application also includes a new small reception hut and picnic benches. The site’s existing facilities and clubhouse will be made available to those using the padel courts, plans explain.
The application was supported by Kirkburn Parish Council who in a comment said, the courts “will assist Driffield RUFC in its continued expansion and the ability to provide additional access to sport and recreational activities for more people, be they players or spectators.”

The parish council did however wish to highlight some concerns including the fact that the land where the padel courts are to be established previously flooded. The parish council added that “the floodlights should be designed and installed such that they do not affect the amenity of local residents.”
In the last year, countless padel courts have been set up around Hull and East Yorkshire. The sport, which was described by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) as “the fastest growing sport in the world”, is a racquet sport played on a 20m x 10m court – roughly half the size of a standard tennis court – and in many ways is a mixture of tennis and squash. It’s played on an enclosed court with the ball being allowed to bounce off the walls while remaining in play.
