A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle, driving dangerously, driving whilst unfit through drugs, robbery, failing to stop, possession of a bladed article, assault by ABH and criminal damage to a property

A man suspected to have stolen a vehicle he then crashed while “unfit through drugs” was caught with the help of a hero dog on Tuesday, Humberside Police has said.

The crash on Anlaby Road in West Hull happened at 2am when the driver collided with a bollard. He was reportedly requested to stop by officers, but when he failed to do there was a “short pursuit”.

When the vehicle came to a stop, the driver allegedly tried to flee on foot. But he was caught with the help of PD Riggs, securing his “swift arrest”.

In a statement, Humberside Police said: “A man has been arrested after PD Riggs stopped the driver of reported stolen vehicle fleeing the scene of a collision, on Anlaby Road, Hull at around 2am on Tuesday, 24 February.

“Armed response officers patrolling the Hull area sported a vehicle suspected to be connected to criminality, and when requested to stop by officers, the driver allegedly failed to do so.

“Officers subsequently engaged in a short pursuit of the vehicle, which resulted in the stolen vehicle colliding with a bollard on Anlaby Road, Hull. Once stationary it is believed the driver attempted to flee the scene.

“An officer from our specialist dog unit, also in pursuit of the vehicle, stopped alongside the vehicle. PD Riggs was immediately deployed resulting in the swift arrest of the driver.

“A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle, driving dangerously, driving whilst unfit through drugs, robbery, failing to stop, possession of a bladed article, assault by ABH and criminal damage to a property.

“The man remains in police custody at this time.”
