There had been escalating incidents of anti-social behaviour, criminal activity and drug use
Closure orders have been granted against two council-owned flats in Goole following a number of “very serious” problems. East Riding Of Yorkshire Council obtained the orders following reports of incidents of anti-social behaviour, criminal activity and drug use at the properties in Eastgate.
The issues were reported to have started at the end of last year and were caused by one of the tenants and visitors to the property. Many individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol were seen to visit the flats daily and thought to be involved in drug dealing, the council said.
The seriousness of the incidents “escalated” in recent months despite interventions by the police and council. Nuisance caused to people living nearby was described as “very serious”, with residents fearing for the safety of themselves and their homes.
One of the orders prohibits anyone from entering the property for three months. Anyone other than officers from the council, police, other emergency services or utility providers who enters the premises can be fined, imprisoned or both.
The second order prohibits anyone from entering the property for three months, other than the resident, officers from the council, police, other emergency services or utility providers. Anyone else who enters or stays on the premises without a reasonable excuse can also be fined, imprisoned or both.
The orders, which were granted at Beverley Magistrates’ Court, were served on February 18 and run until May 17. The court heard that the council’s anti-social behaviour team officers received numerous complaints from nearby residents and Humberside Police about disorder, criminal activity, violence, verbal abuse and drug use at the flats.
Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for housing and public protection, said: “We are dedicated to ensuring that the East Riding remains a good place to live, and will take stringent action against anti-social behaviour. These closure orders will improve local safety and support the local community.”
“We have worked closely with colleagues from Humberside Police and will continue to do so in the event of further unacceptable behaviour.”
