The 29-year-old has bagged 13 league and cup goals so far this term

Former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan believes an in-built hunger is what drives Hull City striker Oli McBurnie forward, as he continues to enjoy a fine season.

McBurnie joined City in the summer and has gone on to score 12 goals in 22 Championship games and has clocked up an impressive six assists.

That form has seen him talked about as being a must for Scotland when Steve Clarke picks his squad for the World Cup in the summer, though he hasn’t featured in a Tartan Army squad for four years.

The powerful striker has really caught the eye this season, becoming the focal point of the club’s promotion push which sees them sitting fifth in the table, ahead of Saturday’s huge meeting with QPR at the MKM Stadium, closely followed by the visit of play-off rivals Derby County.

“Oli McBurnie has been a hungry young man for a long time. I remember watching him when I was a national team coach. I had a week off, so I went to watch the Under-21s training,” he told BetVictor.

“We didn’t have a game. The two players that impressed me then were John McGinn for different reasons, and Oli McBurnie. I remember playing them against England Under-21s and he came on as a substitute. Scotland were getting battered in the first half and he came on.

“He immediately went to fight with the English defenders. I thought it was great. He was like that in training too. He’s a man that looks like he’s fighting the world for whatever reason, but it works.

“It kind of powers him well in goalscoring positions. When the ball comes in the box, he’s angry. He’s an angry man who wants to score a goal for some reason or other. I don’t know what his anger comes from, but he’s got it. I think he’d be one of the players you’d like on your side if you were up against it.”
