The party won both available seats

Two Liberal Democrat candidates have been elected in an East Riding council town by-election. On February 12, residents elected two members to represent the Westfield ward on Hessle Town Council.

The election sought to elect two councillors and voters could select up to two candidates on their ballot sheets. Of the nine candidates, the Liberal Democrats‘ Bob Carroll and Chris Dunhill topped the poll. Mr Carroll received the most votes with 249, with Mr Dunhill closely following with 241 votes.

The closest runner up, coming in third place, was Paul Shillto from the Independents for Hessle group, with 160 votes. Mr Shillto’s Independents for Hessle colleague, John Wilding came in forth place with 148 votes.

The election was called after two town councillors had been unable to attended meetings for six months, due to personal reasons. Members of the public called for an election to replace the pair.

Just 13.4% turned out out for the election. 579 ballot were cast, 62% of the which came from postal voters.

Cllr Denis Healy, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “A massive thank you to Westfield ward residents in Hessle for their continuing faith in Lib Dem councillors who work their socks off for their communities. It is a privilege for the Liberal Democrats to serve Hessle and we thank residents for their support.”
