Mikey Lewis has been cleared to play Brisbane Broncos in the World Club Challenge after avoiding a suspension. The Hull KR star has received a Grade C charge by the match review panel for the tripping incident involving York Knights’ Liam Harris on the opening night of Super League, carrying five points.
Thanks to a clean disciplinary record, Lewis remains below the six-point threshold that would have triggered a one-match ban. The 24-year-old previously received a Grade B striking charge in February last year, but that offence has now expired after 12 months.
The Rugby Football League’s new disciplinary points system, introduced ahead of 2025, has seen only a handful of trip-related cases, providing some context for Lewis’ charge.
In comparison, the decision not to hand Lewis a Grade D – and thereby a suspension – appears consistent with previous rulings.
Liam Horne was among the Super League players to be charged for a tripping incident last season. The Papua New Guinea international, then with Castleford Tigers prior to his move to Leigh Leopards for 2026, received a Grade B charge and three points, as well as a fine.
Hull KR livewire hooker Jez Litten also copped a Grade A charge during last year’s Good Friday derby against Hull FC for an ‘intentional trip’ – carrying just one point.
Former Hull FC prop Liam Watts was handed a Grade B tripping offence, receiving three points and a fine at the time. St Helens prop Matty Lees received a Grade A trip – carrying one point – during the semi-final against Hull KR last October. Team-mate Alex Walmsley also received a Grade A tripping charge with no further action last March versus the Robins.
Leigh Leopards’ Umyla Hanley and Joe Ofehenguae are further examples of players receiving Grade A charges for tripping last year.
Under the previous disciplinary system, a trip could have resulted in an immediate suspension. The new process, however, provides a clear points-based outcome, justifying the decision on Lewis’ trip ahead of this week’s World Club Challenge.
The two respective champions will go head-to-head on Thursday at a sold-out MKM Stadium, having ended their own title droughts last season. The Robins ended a 40-year wait for major silverware in emphatic fashion, claiming every honour on offer across a historic campaign. Brisbane meanwhile claimed their first NRL Premiership title in 19 years, and look to add a third world honour this week.
