The star defender joins Oli McBurnie and Joe Gelhardt in being nominated this season
Charlie Hughes has picked up his first nomination for Championship Player of the Month after an impressive January for promotion-chasing Hull City.
The talented defender played his part as City recovered from their New Year’s Day loss at home to Stoke City, to go on and win the remaining four games to move them up to third in the table.
During the month, the Tigers claimed successive wins at Southampton and Preston North End, as well as a home win over Swansea City, ending the month with a victory against Blackburn Rovers.
Somewhat surprisingly, boss Sergej Jakirovic wasn’t nominated for a third time this season, despite claiming four successive victories and 12 points from 15.

Alan Browne (Middlesbrough) – wing-back/midfielder
Given a chance by new manager Kim Hellberg, Browne has taken it with relish, both in central midfield and at wing-back. His quality on the ball, as well as a knack for making a difference at vital moments, brought him three goals and an assist.
Charlie Hughes (Hull City) – central defender
A defender who is composed beyond his years, Hughes was pivotal in Hull City, conceding just three goals in five games. Physically tough, he possesses the pace to sweep up danger. He also scored with a header in the win at Southampton.
Sam Smith (Wrexham) – striker
Replacing the injured Kieffer Moore, Smith took his chance with aplomb, scoring Wrexham’s opening goal in four different games. He combines natural positional sense with a calmness in front of goal, as seen in a delightful finish at Derby.
Caleb Taylor (Millwall) – central defender
Taylor has adjusted superbly to the Championship. Learning from Jake Cooper alongside him, he is relaxed as a defender, pivotal to three clean sheets, while his aerial prowess contributed two goals and two assists.
The winner will be announced at 6am on Friday morning, with that decided by judges Don Goodman, Trevor Birch from the EFL and SkyBet’s Ivor Davies.
