The latest Hull City transfer news from Hull Live, as James Furlong leaves the MKM Stadium after more than two years without a league appearance

James Furlong has revealed he spoke with Acun Ilicali before deciding to complete his transfer to NK Maribor.

The 23-year-old finally called time on his Hull City career on Monday when he signed a deal with the Slovenian outfit until the end of the season. The contract contains an option for a further year.

The move completes a frustrating time for the Irishman, who after joining the Tigers from Brighton in September 2023, never actually made a Championship appearance for the club.

The closest he came was being named on the bench against Stoke City on New Year’s Day. He also made 30 appearances on loan with League Two Wimbledon last season.

He trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Monday, having watched Sunday’s match with Koper from the stands, and told the Maribor website: “I’m happy to be here. Maribor is a big club with a rich history. When the opportunity arose to come here, I immediately agreed.

“I have to get used to living in a new environment, a different language and style of play, but I’m really looking forward to the experience and the new journey that awaits me. My first impressions are excellent.

“Before arriving, I spoke with Acun Ilicali, he presented me with what awaits me in Maribor and how I can contribute.

“Upon arrival, I met with the coach, who has a very noticeable passion for football and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“I watched the match against Koper and saw an interesting performance, the boys achieved a big, important victory to join the top. Now I can’t wait to join them on the pitch.”

Explaining the swoop for Furlong Cem Başgül, Head of Football Operations at NK Maribor said: “We know James very well and believe that he will help increase the competition in the team. His football characteristics and attitude meet our requirements and criteria, he will add a healthy dose of competition and provide more solutions during the season.

“We also believe that he will adapt quickly and contribute positively to the team in the coming period,”

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international will link up with ex-City players Oscar Zambrano, Jean Michael Seri and Benjamin Tetteh at Maribor.
