Popular tap room and bar operator Brew York is set to reopen the historic hall within weeks
A historic market hall in East Riding of Yorkshire will soon reopen following a multimillion-pound project to transform it into a vibrant drinking, dining and events destination. Work started last year to transform Goole ’s historic Market Hall into a brand new venue, as one of eight strategic projects being funded through the Goole Town Deal programme.
And Brew York, a brewery based in York which operates tap rooms and bars at venues in York, Leeds, Otley, Pocklington, Guiseley and Knaresborough, won the bid to bring its popular mix of craft beer and street food to Goole. The company plans to open Goole Market Hall this spring, which will comprise four food outlets, a bar with 18 keg lines and six cask beers and live music, sport and events.
William Birch & Sons Ltd, the contractor appointed to carry out the refurbishment work, has been busy making the venue more energy efficient by replacing the roof and glazing, while also carrying out structural repairs and installing improved heating. It is also kitting out the building with a new sound system, new flooring, a new fire alarm, new electrics and new toilet facilities.
Now the second phase of work is seeing the fit-out of the interior of the Market Hall. The Market Yard to the rear of the building is also being transformed as part of the project.

The Goole Town Deal Board is investing £4m of Government funding into the Market Hall, which it sees as an important ‘anchor’ destination that will significantly increase footfall and spending in the town centre.
Chair of the Goole Town Deal Board, Phil Jones, said at the time: “We chose to allocate funding to this exciting project to safeguard the future of one of Goole’s most historic and best known landmarks, but also because it has enormous potential to benefit other town centre businesses and boost the local economy by bringing more people into Goole. We believe that the new-look Market Hall will become a central part of what we consider to be Goole’s cultural quarter, in close collaboration with Junction Goole and Goole Museum, which are both nearby.”
Last summer, the Goole Town Deal Board announced that, following a formal tendering process, Brew York, had won the operator’s tender for the hall. In addition to the food and drink offering from Brew York, the refurbished Market Hall will also offer flexible space for local creative and craft businesses and host events of both a commercial and community nature to generate an income.
Brew York’s managing director, Wayne Smith, said:“We are really excited to be part of this amazing scheme. We have been working closely with the Goole Town Deal team since the back end of 2023 to ensure that we transform the Market Hall into a hub for the town to draw more people out and create a vibrant destination for everyone to enjoy.
“We can’t wait to bring our experience in events and entertaining to the town, and bring along our friends to serve up some of the best brews and local street food in the country.”
