The Tigers have to work closely with the EFL when it comes to bringing in new arrivals to ensure they remain with the terms of their transfer fee ban

Hull City are preparing for their big FA Cup third round clash with Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, but away from the pitch, attention is focused on the transfer window.

City are still forced to work under the same conditions that were imposed on them by the EFL during the summer, though that won’t stop the club from trying to get deals over the line.

Boss Sergej Jakirovic is keen to bolster his ranks, though that will come at a cost, with the Tigers needing to move players out to free up space in their squad.

Here’s the latest news from the MKM Stadium ahead of the visit of Rovers.

The situation explained

City have held talks with the EFL this week in a bid to understand what they can and can’t do in the transfer market this month, and that relates to their finances.

The club are working under an agreed business plan following events over the summer, and because of that, their salary costs are closely monitored. Any change to their budget must be agreed with the EFL, with the Tigers hierarchy explaining how it will be funded. If City, for example, were to bring in another major sponsor, which they’re hoping to do, then in theory, that would allow for their budget to be increased accordingly.

Letting players go off the wage bill also helps with that, and that’s why there is a desire to try and do some wheeling and dealing in the coming days.

It’s understood the EFL have granted permission to sign Seny Dieng without the need to move somebody out to accommodate him, following those conversations this week and talks are ongoing with the governing body.

Does Harry Vaughan’s exit change anything?

In short, no. Vaughan is part of the Under-21 setup, and his salary isn’t considered significant enough to have an impact on senior players coming in.

Midfielder Vaughan has joined Dublin-based Bohemians on loan until the summer, ahead of their new season getting underway next month. He’s out of contract in the summer, though City do have a 12-month option to extend it for a further year.

As it stands, City would need to move out a senior player in order to bring in Kieran Dowell, for example. Or indeed, any other player for that matter.

That said, the club remain in conversation with the EFL in a bid to try and create some extra room for Jakirovic to sign players. As it stands, however, aside from Dieng, it remains a one-in and one-out policy as Jakirovic has explained on numerous occasions.

Anything else?

Tyrell Sellars-Fleming has seen his loan spell at Scunthorpe United come to an end, and now, the young forward who impressed in pre-season, will head to Grimsby Town.

The 19-year-old spent three months at Glanford Park and bagged six goals in 16 appearances in league and cup, but will now be tested with the Mariners in League Two.

Like Vaughan before him, his departure will have no bearing on the Tigers’ ability to make first-team signings in the next three weeks or so.
