The latest updates after two confirmed dead in new year tragedy at Withernsea
1 Two people have tragically died after a ‘number of people’ were reported in difficulty in the sea at Withernsea. Humberside Police confirmed the deaths separately on Friday night.
2 One victim was a 67-year-old man, who was recovered unconscious from the water but sadly died a short time later, despite the best efforts of emergency services. No details have been released about the second victim, who had already died when they were found.
3 Searches are continuing this morning for a third person missing in the water. HM Coastguard said teams stood down at around 12.30am today and were due to reconvene at first light.
4 Multiple emergency services were called just after 3pm. The search and rescue operation which is led by HM Coastguard, includes RNLI, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue.
5 The owner of the Castle Cafe at Withernsea has revealed how a member of his staff braved the freezing waters to try to help the rescue efforts.
6 Search teams have been supported by the local community with the offer of warm spaces and drinks. The Methodist Church on Hull Road will be open between 10am and noon for prayers.
7 Conditions for the operation were described as “horrendous” with plummeting temperatures and a snow and ice warning in effect. Hornsea Inshore Rescue reported that their own lifeboat launch was impossible due to the severe conditions.
8 Humberside Police have asked members of the public to stay away from the area while teams work.
