Members of the public have been asked to stay away

A major search is continuing tonight for four people who got into difficulty in the sea at Withernsea. Multiple emergency services and crews are on the scene and members of the public have been asked to stay away from the area.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman has now said it is believed that four people are missing in the water. She said the service is still on the scene, more than three hours after first receiving the emergency call at around 3.15pm, together with all the other rescue services at Withernsea, where the sun set today just after 3.50pm.

She said: “Yorkshire Ambulance is still on the scene. We’ve got mountain rescue, several ambulances and tactical commanders from Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Humberside Fire and Rescue and Police all there.

“It’s believed to be four people in the water. We still have a presence on scene along with all the other resources.” The large-scale operation involves numerous agencies across air and ground. These include HM Coastguard, the RNLI, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Humberside Police, and Humberside Fire and Rescue.
