The latest transfer news from around the MKM Stadium
Hull City have triggered a contract extension in John Egan’s MKM Stadium deal which will see him remain at the club until the end of next season.
Egan is expected to be closely followed by Regan Slater and skipper Lewie Coyle, with talks verging on being wrapped up with the two stalwarts of the club’s promotion from League One.
Both Coyle and Slater see their deals run out this summer, and though the Tigers have 12-month options, they’re close to agreeing new long-term deals to extend their stay at the MKM Stadium.
Defender Egan was one of a flurry of key arrivals in January last year, and he played his part in helping the Tigers remain in the Championship. This season, he’s been a regular under Sergej Jakirovic.
His contract was due to expire at the end of the current campaign, but the Tigers have moved to keep the experienced central defender at the club for at least another 18 months.
The 33-year-old from Cork has played in 22 of City‘s 25 games, as well as playing in the Carabao Cup tie at Wrexham back in August, with his solitary goal coming at Swansea City in September to salvage a dramatic point.
Owing to his form this season for the Tigers, Egan was recalled to the Republic of Ireland setup and could yet feature in this summer’s World Cup, if they can get through their play-offs in March.
Egan, who played 90 minutes on New Year’s Day hopes to see City return to winning ways after their disappointing defeat to Stoke City, when they host Watford on Sunday afternoon.
“We tried to win the game (against Stoke), and then we went one-nil down,” he said. “We tried to get back into the game, probably a bit unlucky with a couple of efforts, but listen, we move on now. We take that on the chin, we learn from it, and we move on to the next one.
“You want to try and win every game you play, so we’re disappointed to lose the game. We’ve got another quick turnaround now to Sunday, another big game, so we need to focus on that now.
“It’s relentless, but any footballer will tell you they’d rather play games than train. The squad is stretched, but that’s what you have a squad for.
“Everybody in our squad can produce, and everybody’s well able, so I think every team is probably affected by a lot of different things, so it is what it is.
“Every Christmas there’s a lot of games. We had a couple of decent results, had four points from the last two, and we didn’t get any points. We know it’s a big chance on Sunday to try and get more points on the board.”
