The event in memory of James Barlow will raise money to help his young family

Colleagues, friends and relatives of a Hull man who tragically died days after being hit by a car are determined to raise as much money as they can from a sponsored event in his name. James Barlow, 36, was a pedestrian when he was struck by a vehicle at about 11pm on Saturday, November 29 in Holderness Road at the junction of Marfleet Lane.

James was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries. He sadly died on Tuesday, December 9.

Now friends from Siemens where James worked have organised a sponsored walk and talk, followed by a race day, raffle and more, on Sunday, December 28. Colleagues, pals and relatives are all pitching in with publicising and participating in the event.

One of the couples helping are Callum Lewis and his partner Annie Hutson, who are taking part in “James Barlow’s walk, talk and race day”, starting out from Hull Kingston Rovers fan James’s “beloved” Craven Park, at 10am. It will end at the Silver Cod pub, in Anlaby Road, at about 12.30pm where the fundraising and awareness will continue.

Annie said: “James was a huge fan of Rovers; he was absolutely devoted to the club and that’s why the walk is starting from Craven Park. If James was here he would have been front and centre of this, he would have loved it.”

Annie said she and Callum had been very close to James – “his partner is godparent to our children” – and that they wanted to do all they could to help the fundraising day be a success. “It’s his work colleagues who decided to organise the walk and we thought we should try to publicise it as much as we could.”

Annie said anyone was welcome to join in all of the sponsored walk, for which there is a GoFundMe appeal running, or just sections of it. A raffle, auction and race event at the Silver Cod would add to the proceeds, she said.

“It’s all to raise money towards James’s funeral and to help his family. He has two children and three stepchildren.”

Annie said: “James was just full of life and laughter.” The GoFundMe page set up by Annie’s partner Callum said: “All money raised will go straight to James’s family to cover whatever they may need, whether that be for the funeral or for living themselves.

“Not asking for the world but let’s support this man’s family like he supported HKR, with unconditional love and passion.” A social media post by the Duke of York pub, at Sutton, where James also had family connections, encouraged anyone who would like to join the walk, donate, or simply come along to show support, and that any of this would be greatly appreciated.

Sponsor forms for the walk are also available to pick up at the Duke.
