The newscaster is asking people to pick up a mug and support BBC Children In Need
Charities and societies from across the BBC Look North region have provided popular presenter Peter Levy with quite the collection of mugs. He invited groups to be part of his Mug of the Day initiative, in the hope their own branded mugs might get a moment in the spotlight – and their organisation a shout-out – during one of Peter’s bulletins.
Now, the news show host has announced he is giving away the mounting collection – and in return asking for donations for BBC Children In Need. Peter has posted that he will be at Hull’s Walton Street car boot sale on Wednesday, December 17, from 8am, with the mugs.
In the post on X, Peter said: “If you are in Hull, I’ll be at Walton Street car boot tomorrow morning at 8……be lovely to see you.” Last week the presenter “revealed all” about the fate of the mugs.
He said: “People keep asking me what we’re doing with all the mugs. I’ll tell you what we’re doing.
“Next Wednesday morning, Walton Street car boot sale, between 8 and 10. I’ll be giving the mugs away, but you can make a donation for Children In Need.
“Come along, say hello, have a selfie, get yourself a mug, maybe make a donation to Children In Need. Hopefully, see you there.”
One person replied: “Brilliant idea.” Another commented: “Save me one as I can’t get to Hull until next month, my birthday month.”
Among the responses was one that said: “8am…is it light by then?” A further reply said: “I hope you get lots of donations. Best wishes Peter.”
One wit asked: “Got any small Christmas trees to sell?”, a tongue-in-cheek reference to a recent blooper by Peter. The host struggled to contain himself during a live broadcast and a segment about people putting up their Christmas decorations.
Asking people to get in touch about when they put their Christmas tree up, Peter told viewers: “Mine’s only a small one, but it did go up this weekend,” which brought on a fit of the giggles – and later got included on Have I Got News For You?
The branded mugs that have graced Peter’s TV studio desk have included ones from local sports clubs, including Grimsby Town and Winterton Rangers, charities, BBC Radio Humberside and Radio Lincolnshire, and Hull’s Headscarf Revolutionaries. They have popped up during the early evening news programme, often when Peter has shared a few words with the weather presenter of the day.
Peter has jokingly referred to the sending in of mugs as “mug-gate”, in posts about additions to the collection.
