The network is a key part of the council’s net zero commitments
Key facts about the Hull District Heat Network
- The Hull District Heat Network (HDHN) is a project that will provide the city with heat generated by utilising waste energy and is a key part of Hull City Council’s environmental commitments by delivering an estimated 110,000 tCOe of carbon savings over 40 years.
- The council’s cabinet recently approved plans for four key city centre buildings to be connected to the network. In addition to wider decarbonisation projects for each building, the Guildhall, City Hall, Wilson Centre, and History Centre will each be connected to the HDHN.
- The Government owned National Wealth Fund has announced a £27m loan for the HDHN which is to repaid through the operation of the network. The network is also funded through a £15m grant from the Green Heat Network Fund, via Triple Point and £1.5m of Levelling Up Partnership funding.
- In September, work on the network’s hot water pipes began. The timing of the work was coordinated to align with the repairs being made to Drypool Bridge. Much of Alfred Gelder Street was dug up to allow the new pipes to be laid.
- The centrepiece of the HDHN’s infrastructure will be a new energy centre built next to Napoleons Casino & Restaurant off the A165. The energy centre, which received planning permission in the Spring, will stand 11m tall, housing water source heat pumps, a boiler room, and a transformer.
