The iconic vessel will be the centrepiece of a new visitor attraction
Key facts about the Arctic Corsair’s new home at the North End Shipyard
- The North End Shipyard is being revived to create a permanent dry dock home for the Arctic Corsair, which is a key relic of Hull’s deep-sea fishing heritage. The site will act as an interactive museum, allowing visitors to learn about the life of a trawlerman and the vessel’s rich history.
- The development is one part of the wider Hull Maritime project, which also includes refurbishment of the Hull Maritime Museum, the redevelopment of Queen’s Gardens, and the conservation of the Spurn Lightship. The major heritage project funded by Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
- In addition to the vessel itself, the project includes a state-of-the-art visitor centre. The newly built site recently received the globally respected Passivhauv accreditation, which is recognised as the height of energy efficiency, with certified buildings using around 90% less energy than normal buildings.
- Hull’s last remaining Scotch Derrick crane has now been reinstated at the site. The crane has undergone extensive restoration and now proudly stands near the new visitor centre. Cllr Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “We’re thrilled to see the crane back in its rightful place. This restoration not only preserves a vital piece of our maritime history but also enhances the visitor experience at the North End Shipyard. A proud piece of our past, now protected for the future.”
- A planning application has now been submitted to the council seeking permission to dredge part of the River Hull between Drypool Bridge and North Bridge to allow the vessel to travel to its new home.
