An inmate has claimed they feel ‘unsafe’ there
East Yorkshire’s new prison has continued to deny reports of any riot action on the wings, but it has now confirmed an incident resulting in damage did take place. Category C prison HMP Millsike, which holds just under 1,500 inmates, at Full Sutton, opened in March.
Earlier this month, several reports surfaced on social media claiming disturbances had occurred at the prison, with some alleging riot activity. These claims were denied by the prison, with a spokesman saying that the “minor incidents” were “quickly resolved.”
However, a second complaint – a phone call from an anonymous inmate sent to YorkshireLive – claimed “disturbances” were ongoing in the prison. A transcript of the phone call alleged that the E Wing has been “heavily damaged” with sprinklers activated, and the whistleblower also said that they “felt unsafe” there.
The prison is run privately by Mitie, who issued a second statement explaining that, although there was a “minor incident” at House Block E, the issue was swiftly resolved – with allegations of “riots” being untrue.
A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there was a minor incident on House Block E yesterday which resulted in damage to the sprinkler system and some minimal water damage. However, the issue was manged effectively by colleagues and swiftly resolved. Allegations regarding a “riot” or stabbing are untrue.”
From the prior statement, a spokesperson said: “Mitie remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of everyone at HMP Millsike. Our dedicated teams deliver professional care in often challenging circumstances, and the prison continues to operate in line with established protocols.”
