It was the year Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer, the first launch of the Columbia space shuttle, and the year Raiders Of The Lost Ark brought Indiana Jones to cinemas for the first time.

We’ve had a look through the archives, and unearthed photographs of the official opening of the Humber Bridge by HRH The Queen Elizabeth and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on July 17, 1981. It had already been open to traffic since June 24, but the royal visit and a display by the RAF’s Red Arrows generated a lot of excitement at the opening ceremony.

There is also a good dose of nostalgia in numerous school photos, with children at various Hull schools enjoying piggy-backs, learning to use the first computers, and having a school trip on the old ‘Farringford’ ferry across the River Humber.

If you keep going, you will find photographs of MPs James Johnson for Hull West and John Prescott for Hull East raising awareness of Hull’s high unemployment rate. There are also scenes from the old Post Office on Alfred Gelder Street and the BP factory at Saltend.
