He also threatened to stab the victim’s father when he challenged him

A violent troublemaker wrestled a man’s motorcycle off him in his own garden in a nasty robbery in which he also threatened to stab the victim’s father. Bobby Gibson, 22, of Woodcock Street, west Hull, but recently in custody on remand, admitted robbery on August 14 this year.

Billy Torbett, prosecuting, told Hull Crown Court that a man returned to his home in Bethune Avenue, Hessle, on a blue and white Suzuki motorcycle at about 7.30pm. He parked it outside his home with the intention of walking through to his back garden to secure the motorcycle.

Gibson commented on the motorcycle and expressed an interest in it. The man did not reply but Gibson told him: “Oi! Don’t be rude, d***head.”

The man ignored him and took his helmet off but Gibson asked him what size the motorcycle was. The owner told him “250” and Gibson replied: “Okay, you need a chain for that.”

The man told him that he already had that and a steering lock and disc lock. He was wheeling the motorcycle through a side gate when Gibson grabbed the top box and started to pull the motorcycle out of the garden.

There was a tussle and Gibson told the man: “Leave it, leave it, you’ll get another one.” He threw punches at the man. Some missed but one hit and caused a cut to his right eye, causing him to fall against the motorcycle.

The man’s father challenged Gibson but the victim urged him to go back in and call the police. Gibson made threats and said: “You calling the police? I have got a knife. Leave it, leave it or I will f***ing stab you.”

Gibson wheeled the motorcycle but he was challenged by neighbours and he dropped the it on its side. He fled on foot through a neighbour’s garden but he was traced by police and was arrested on August 22.

The man had been left “fearing retribution” from Gibson because the robber knew where he lived. He was concerned for the safety of himself and his father.

Gibson made no comment to all questions during police interview. He had convictions for 16 previous offences, including for violence and dishonesty. One of these was conspiracy to burgle the home of Ian Staves, who was found dead at the address in September 2022. Gibson was jailed for three years in December 2024.

Fiver other men were found guilty of manslaughter and conspiracy to burgle Mr Staves’ home.

Oliver Shipley, mitigating, said that Gibson claimed that his head was “off the planet” at the time of the “ugly and very frightening” robbery. “He is genuinely very sorry,” said Mr Shipley.

“He has no recollection of the event. He has turned to Class A drugs and alcohol. He is showing a real degree of insight into the offending in this case.

“He knows he has to turn a corner or he will be one of those who serve a life sentence in instalments. He recognises the need to change.”
