‘It’s a good reminder on my arm to push myself out of my comfort zone’
One Karl Bushby fan has a permanent reminder of the day the adventurer made it home. Jack Mason decided to join in with Karl’s final few miles from Hull city centre to Sutton Park on the spur of the moment.
Without a piece of paper for Karl to sign, he asked him to sign his arm. Later that day, he got the signature tattooed on his forearm, saying the act is a “reminder to keep my word”.
Jack, who works as a delivery driver for the Pre-loved charity shop on Whitefriargate, which supports mental health charity HELP, had just finished a shift when he and a co-worker stumbled across Karl on Monday. He decided to join in, and when Karl stopped at the end of his mum’s street, he asked him to sign his arm.
Jack told Karl he would get the signature as a tattoo and was true to his word. Later that day, he went to Sacred Moon Tattoo, and admits the signature turned out a little bigger than he first expected.
Jack said: “I didn’t have anything for him to sign. I said ‘If you sign my arm I’ll get it tattooed today’. We made a bet. I thought ‘he’s done it real big’, but it’s a reminder to keep my word’, and that’s what I’ve done.
“We knew about him but we weren’t following him fully. We didn’t know he was coming home that day. We were on the way home from work and bumped into him. All we wanted was a picture with him, I wasn’t planning a tattoo. When I asked him to sign my arm, I thought it would be a little small one.”

Jack thinks Karl may have made the signature large so that he would chicken out of getting the tattoo – but instead the 18-year-old went straight to the tattoo parlour before the sharpie had a chance to rub off. The tattoo took around 40 minutes and is healing up nicely.
Jack said: “I asked him what’s the best lesson you learned out of the 28 years, and he replied ‘have more confidence in yourself and keep smiling – it will get you out of trouble’. It’s a good reminder on my arm to do things I don’t want to do and push myself out of my comfort zone. It’s a really good lesson and I chose the perfect person to get the lesson from.”
