‘We are sad to inform you that due to personal and external situations Spiders Club has closed’

A legendary Hull nightclub which has entertained the masses for more than 40 years has left revellers devastated after announcing its immediate closure. Spread over two floors and numerous bars, Spiders has been a city centre institution since 1979, serving up rites of passage nights for thousands through its heady mix of music styles, from rock, punk and metal to Motown, 80s and classic alternative.

Now, having held a special place in Hull hearts as the city’s original Indie club for 46 years, its owners have taken to social media to announce that its web of wonder has spun for the last time. In a statement they said: “We are sad to inform you that due to personal and external situations, Spiders Club has closed, it will be put up for sale on the open market, including the freehold; as they say, Lock Stock and Barrel.

“We know closing the club will come as a great shock to many of you, as the club is financially sound and doing well, but there comes a time, after 46 years of loving our club and what it gave to the people of Kingston upon Hull, that now, is the right time to hopefully pass it on to others, who will carry it forward with the same enthusiasm, idealism and integrity, that we started so many years ago.

“We appreciate that many of you will be upset by the club closing, but please remember, as the saying goes, time and tide wait for no man or woman, and for us, being upset, doesn’t even come close. To all our loyal and respected customers. Take care and thanks for being a part of our journey.”

Spiders Nightclub has been privately owned by a local couple since its launch in the 1970s, as revealed in this nostalgic article, and has always remained free of ties from breweries. As a fiercely independent, non-mainstream club famed for entertaining goths, rockers and students it certainly hasn’t sought to attract celebrities, but has pulled in some famous faces all the same. Famous names includes actress and former University of Hull student Sally Lindsay – and stand-up Lucy Beaumont once pulled pints there.

It’s not known when the bar will be on the market but hopes will be high that new owners can step in to reopen the business.
