Resurfacing works are being carried out ahead of an eight-week closure of Drypool Bridge
The second planned weekend closure of Hull’s North Bridge has been postponed. Last month, Hull City Council announced the crossing would fully shut for two weekends for resurfacing works.
The first of these closures took place between March 21 and 23 with the second scheduled for this weekend. However, this will now happen at a later date.
In a statement, a Hull City Council spokesperson said: “The second full closure of North Bridge, due to take place from 6am on Saturday 11 April until 6am on Monday 13 April, has been postponed. We will provide an update once a new date has been confirmed.”
Hull City Council previously said the works will ensure the bridge remains safe and operational. The deteriorated road surfacing is being repaired in anticipation of heavier traffic later this year when Drypool Bridge closes for eight weeks. That closure is expected to begin in mid-to-late May.
The authority said that, by carrying out North Bridge repairs now, “it will prevent the damaged areas from worsening, which could otherwise lead to an unplanned closure later in the year”.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “With the increased volume of traffic that will use North Bridge as part of the diversion and designated bus route during the upcoming Drypool Bridge closure, these works are essential to ensure the bridge remains safe and operational.
“By repairing the deteriorated areas now, we can prevent them from worsening and avoid a much more disruptive, unplanned closure in the future.
“We understand the inconvenience these weekend closures will cause and appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation whilst our contractors carry-out these vital works.”
When the closure takes place, North Bridge will be shut to all road users, cyclists, and emergency vehicles. Access will be maintained for pedestrians.
