The 13th floor of the prime city centre building will soon have an all-year round event space, also creating jobs

A rooftop bar on the 13th floor of a prominent Hull city centre tower is set to be created, backed by six-figure investment. With 360 degree views across the city, the new all-year round space will have a glass surround with sliding doors opening onto a new decked garden area, complete with a retractable canopy roof and a new bar.

The new all-year round space is being built at Sebu, the penthouse restaurant and cocktail bar serving Filipino dishes from the 12th floor of the K2 Tower on Bond Street. The family firm has been awarded a grant of £68,375 by Hull City Council to improve the sky garden on the building’s 13th floor.

The business is also investing £68,375 of its own money for the project, which will feature new amenities including a heat pump and insulated flooring. The grant forms part of the £1.5m awarded to the council through the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Pride in Place Impact Funding.

The funding’s three main objectives are to create, improve or refurbish community spaces, enhance public space such as green spaces and sports and leisure amenities, and make high streets and town centres more attractive and welcoming place to encourage economic activity.

The council is using £750,000 of the money to continue its highly successful city centre regeneration investment programme, with the other half being added to the Community Highstreets programme to expand its activity. Almost 3,000sqft of unused floor space will be brought back into use by Sebu as a result. Up to eight new jobs will also to be created.

Chris Jackson, director for regeneration and partnerships at the council, said: “This grant to Sebu Limited not only supports a family-run business, but also creates a new commercial and events space in the city centre.

“The council’s City Centre Grants scheme is aimed at helping businesses to thrive and create further opportunities for social and cultural activity, exactly what this grant award is supporting.”

The announcement comes a week after Hull theatre company Middle Child announced it is creating a new cultural, community and commercial hub, thanks to support from the Government-backed City Centre Grant scheme. Middle Child is to refurbish and enhance its Humber Street base with a new customised and permanent seating bank, green room facilities and a heating and air conditioning system.

There will also be upgrades to electrical infrastructure and lighting and power systems to ensure the venue is more welcoming and accessible. Middle Child will be match-funding the City Centre Grant scheme’s award of £35,332.49.
